This week marks the beginning of my newest adventure, revolutionizing the enterprise backup industry with authentic SaaS at Clumio. So you are probably wondering… why backup and what is “authentic SaaS? Isn’t all SaaS… SaaS? Before getting into why I am excited, let’s take a step back and look at some of the realities that enterprises deal with today.
Most enterprises have a cloud initiative, sometimes called a “cloud mandate” to move a portion, if not everything, to the cloud in a series of phases or years. If most CIOs had their way, they would have moved everything out of the data center already, due to the complexity, costs, and resources pulled away from their core mission. Getting applications to the cloud takes time, requires re-platforming, and disrupts the business. Most hope to replace their on-premises applications with “as a service” offerings, so they don’t have to re-platform or manage the solution whatsoever.
Unfortunately, “as a service” offerings come in various shapes and sizes. Today most of the legacy on-premises products have been virtualized and wrapped with a consumption model that looks like SaaS, but it still requires paying for backend cloud, managing virtual appliances as you scale, and user intervention for software upgrades. Most enterprises quickly realize this is a tough space to play in and these “SaaS” solutions are not authentic.
But the good news is that backup actually is set up for success, as it has less re-platforming required compared to applications running in your datacenter. But to get a true “authentic SaaS” solution it is required to be architected in a cloud-first mentality using the first principles of the public cloud, not a retrofit of an on-premise solution.
This is where I fell in love with Clumio and so have our customers. Clumio is an enterprise backup as a service that is simple and intuitive, scales on-demand, with predictable costs, global compliance, and built-in security. It is authentic SaaS because there is no management of anything as you scale or additional cloud backend to integrate. The best part of all is that you can throw your backup solution out of the datacenter and deliver on your cloud initiative or mandate and move forward on your cloud journey. And once you are in the cloud, you can continue to use the Clumio service to protect your cloud workloads (more on this soon). This is why I chose Clumio and can’t wait to talk to you more about this authentic SaaS solution.
Take care and stay SaaSy, my friends.
